Service WHOIS Records

Keep a domain's four registry contacts correct and switch WHOIS privacy on or off from the service record, without opening the registrar's own panel.

Reaching the Screen

Open Orders › Services, select a domain service and pick the WHOIS tab: {admin}/services/detail?id={service}&content=whois

The tab is built only for a domain service, but it ignores the service state: the Transfer tab beside it needs an active domain, while WHOIS is there for a waiting, suspended, expired or cancelled one too.

What Is on the Screen

Two cards are stacked here. WHOIS Privacy says whether owner data is hidden and who pays for it; WHOIS Contacts holds the four contact records a registry keeps for every domain.

WHOIS Privacy Card

Badges on the left, buttons on the right. Everything shown comes from the domain's WHOIS Privacy add-on record and a flag on the service; the registry is not queried while the tab is drawn. Enable and Disable are rendered only for an active service bound to a module, one at a time depending on the current state. Otherwise the card is read-only.

Enable is wired to two different things, and the add-on decides which one you get. With a WHOIS Privacy add-on on the domain it turns privacy on at the provider. Without one it does not touch privacy at all: it aims at the add-on purchase flow instead, and that call is broken at the moment, so pressing it opens no window and changes nothing. On a domain with no add-on, add the add-on from the Addons tab first. Disable always turns privacy off.

Active / InactiveAlways one of the two. Active needs an add-on that is neither cancelled nor expired, plus the privacy flag on the service.
ExpiresOnly when the add-on holds a valid due date, in the panel's date format.
FreeThe add-on amount is zero, which is how a TLD that includes privacy appears.
PriceReplaces Free above zero: the add-on's own currency, then its billing cycle.
InvoiceThe add-on points at an invoice; the number is a link that opens it.

WHOIS Contacts Card

The header carries Sync from Registrar, which needs an active service, a bound module, and a module able to read contacts back. The body opens with Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing tabs, Registrant first. At the foot is one centred Save Changes button, disabled until something changes and rendered under the same condition as the privacy buttons.

Each tab starts with a dropdown listing No Profile and every WHOIS profile saved on the domain's client, so the same set is offered on all of that client's domains. New Profile is always shown; Edit Profile and Delete Profile appear once a profile is selected. Apply to all contacts copies the current tab's contact into the other three. These stay rendered whatever the state is, so on an inactive domain you can select a profile with no way to save it.

Below them a read-only panel shows Full Name, Organization, Email, Phone, Fax and Address. The name, the numbers and the address are assembled from several fields, and a missing value prints a dash. Edit Contact sits under the panel and needs an active service with a bound module.

Fields

The fields sit in two windows sharing one form: Edit Contact writes into the current tab, New Profile and Edit Profile into a saved profile. An asterisk marks what registries demand, but the panel does not block the save, so an incomplete set is refused by the provider.

Profile NameRequired, and the only field the panel enforces. Profile window only; a label you pick later, not a registry value.
First Name, Last NameBoth marked required and stored apart, as registrars ask for the parts separately. Joined for the Full Name line.
OrganizationOptional. Some TLDs read a filled value as a company registration.
EmailMarked required. Registry notices go here, so use an address the client reads.
Phone, FaxPhone is marked required, fax optional. Both use a country selector; code and number are stored apart and rejoined for display.
AddressMarked required, one line. On save it is cut into two parts of 64 characters.
CountryMarked required. Searchable list with flags; the two-letter code leaves for the provider.
State/Province, City, Postal CodeAll marked required and all free text, since accepted spellings differ per registry.

Tasks

Editing one contact

  1. Pick the record on the pill bar: Registrant, Administrative, Technical or Billing.
  2. Press Edit Contact under the preview, change the fields and press Save Changes at the foot of the window.
  3. The preview updates, the profile selection is cleared and Save Changes under the card turns active. Nothing has reached the provider yet.

Filling a contact from a saved profile

  1. Open the profile dropdown on the contact tab and choose a profile; the preview fills and the pencil and bin buttons appear.
  2. Tick Apply to all contacts to put the same profile into the other three tabs.
  3. Press Save Changes under the card. Choosing No Profile again restores the contact stored on the service.

Creating a contact profile

  1. Press the plus button (New Profile) at the end of the profile dropdown on any contact tab.
  2. Type a label in Profile Name, fill in the contact fields and press Add at the foot of the window.
  3. The profile is saved on the domain's client, appears in all four dropdowns and is selected in the tab you started from.

Writing the contacts to the provider

  1. Finish every change across the four tabs; the button sends all of them together, not one tab at a time.
  2. Press Save Changes at the foot of the card; the four contacts leave in one call to the registrar module.
  3. A refusal shows the provider's message and writes nothing. On success the set is stored, the button returns to disabled and the change is written to the operator's action log.

Pulling the contacts from the provider

  1. Press Sync from Registrar in the card header. A missing button means one of the three conditions from the card description failed: the service is not active, no module is bound, or the module cannot read contacts back.
  2. The four previews are replaced with what the provider returns, and every profile selection is cleared.
  3. The set is written onto the service straight away, and Save Changes turns active so you can correct the pulled values and push them back.

Turning WHOIS privacy on or off

  1. Check that the domain carries a WHOIS Privacy add-on; if it has none, add it from the Addons tab of the same service, which is the only route that works today.
  2. With the add-on in place, press Enable in the WHOIS Privacy card to hide the owner data, or Disable to publish it again. Without the add-on, Enable hides nothing.
  3. A refusal leaves the state alone. On success the badge flips between Active and Inactive, the buttons swap, and the new state is stored and logged.

Deleting a contact profile

  1. Select the profile in any contact tab and press the bin button (Delete Profile).
  2. Confirm in the window that opens; it names the profile so you can check you have the right one.
  3. The profile leaves the client account and all four dropdowns; tabs that used it fall back to the contact stored on the service, and contacts already at the provider are untouched.

Things to Watch

Saving reaches the registry, not just WISECP

Save Changes sends all four contacts to the registrar module in one call, and they are stored locally only after the provider accepts. Treat a registrant change with the care of a transfer.

Profiles belong to the client, not to the domain

A profile is saved on the client account and offered on every domain that client owns. Deleting one removes it everywhere at once, and it does not undo contacts already written to a provider.

The privacy badge reads the add-on, not the registry

Active is shown only while the privacy add-on is live and the service carries the privacy flag. A cancelled or expired add-on turns the badge to Inactive even when the provider still hides the data.

Required Privileges

The service detail page, and with it this tab, opens for a staff account holding either SERVICES_LOOK or SERVICES_OPERATION.
