Creating a News Item

Announce something on your website, choose who gets to read it, and mail it to your newsletter subscribers in one step.

Reaching the Screen

Panel menu: Site Management, then News and Announcements. Above the list, click Create News.

{admin}/manage-website/news/add

What Is on the Screen

The page form, plus the audience and newsletter settings that only news carries.

Language tabs One tab per published language, at the top of the form.
Audience switches Whether the news is published at all, and whether it is limited to signed-in clients.
Newsletter box Mails the news to your subscribers when you save.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) An indexing switch, a page title and a meta description.

The language tabs

The tabs choose which language you are writing. Title, Link Structure, Content and the SEO boxes hold one value per language.

The switches, the images and Hide Sidebar are shared by every language, so they appear on the default language tab only.

Who reads it

Visible to All starts on and is the publish switch: while it is on, every visitor can open the news. Display in Client Area narrows the audience instead of widening it — turn it on and only signed-in clients see the news, while anonymous visitors get a 404 error at its address.

Turning Visible to All off unpublishes the news completely: it leaves every listing and the sitemap, and its own address returns a 404 error for everyone. There is no combination that shows it in the client area only while it stays unpublished.

The newsletter box

Notify newsletter subscribers mails this news to everyone on your newsletter list. It appears while you are creating the news, not later.

The mails leave in the background, so the save itself finishes at once.

The web address

Link Structure shows the address the news will get, and follows the title as you type. The pencil button lets you rewrite the bold part.

The panel checks the address and warns you when another page already holds it.

Fields

Title Required on every language tab. Saving stops while one is empty.
Link Structure Optional. Left alone, it is built from the title.
Visible to All On. Every visitor can read the news.
Display in Client Area Off. On, the news is limited to signed-in clients and anonymous visitors get a 404 error at its address.
Notify newsletter subscribers Off. Only on this screen, and only sends while Visible to All is on.
Hide Sidebar Off. Turn it on to show the news at full width.
Listing Image Optional. Shown next to the news in listings. The screen suggests 600 x 600 px, up to 2 MB, JPG, PNG, SVG or WebP. The upload is scaled down to a fixed width and keeps its own proportions, so the height is not fixed.
Background Image Optional. The screen suggests 1920 x 400 px, up to 2 MB, same formats. The upload is scaled to 1920 px wide and keeps its own proportions.
Content The news body, written per language in the editor.
Enable SEO On. Off keeps the two boxes below from being saved.
Page Title Optional, per language. Empty falls back to the title.
Meta Description Optional, per language.

Tasks

Publish the news

  1. Fill in Title and Content on the first language tab.
  2. Open each remaining tab and write the same news there.
  3. Click Create. The news is saved as active and the news list opens.

Mail it to subscribers

  1. On the default language tab, leave Visible to All on.
  2. Tick Notify newsletter subscribers before saving.
  3. Click Create. Subscribers receive the news by e-mail shortly after.

Things to Watch

The newsletter goes out once

The box works on this screen alone, and only during the first save. Editing the news later never mails subscribers again, and a news item saved with Visible to All off sends nothing at all.

Every language needs a title

The save is refused when a language tab has no title, and the message names the language. Content may stay empty, a title may not.

Both switches off hides the news

The news is then unpublished: it appears in no listing and its own address returns a 404 error, so the link cannot be shared for preview either. Turn Visible to All on unless you are preparing something you will announce later.

Required Privileges

The screen and its save need MANAGE_WEBSITE_OPERATION. Without it the create button is missing from the news list.
