Select the mail delivery module used by the application, so transactional messages leave the system through the provider you have configured.
Reaching the Screen
Go to Settings → Mail: {admin}/modules/mail
What Is on the Screen
The Initial tab selects one default mail module. All Modules lists the installed mail integrations and opens provider-specific settings.
Fields
Tasks
Select the default mail module
- Configure the intended provider from its card under All Modules.
- Return to the Initial tab and select that provider as the default module.
- Save. New outgoing mail uses the selected module when its provider configuration is valid.
Change the delivery provider
- Configure and test the replacement module.
- Select it under Default Module and save.
- Subsequent mail is routed through the replacement provider.
Things to Watch
Saving is refused if it would switch email delivery off while an active staff member receives their sign-in code by email. This covers choosing none here and turning the active module off on its own settings page. The message names those staff members. Move them to another two-factor method, or turn their two-factor authentication off in Adding and Editing an Administrator, then save again.
Email delivery can also go away some other way, such as removed module files. An account that gets its sign-in code by email is then not locked out. At its next sign-in, its email two-factor verification is switched off and the account's log records why. Administrators with settings access see a notice in the bell.
Selecting a module does not create its provider credentials. Complete and test the module configuration first to avoid interrupted delivery.
Automatic lets the server pick the method and tries CRAM-MD5 first. Some providers, Postal for example, expect a different username for CRAM-MD5 than for PLAIN or LOGIN. Pick the method your provider documents; the connection test names the method it used.
Microsoft is turning off password sign-in for SMTP. From the end of December 2026 it is off by default in existing organisations and unavailable in new ones. In Standard SMTP, choose OAuth 2.0 (Microsoft 365) as the authentication method. Then enter the tenant ID, application (client) ID and client secret of an app registered in Microsoft Entra. Use smtp.office365.com, port 587 with TLS, and the mailbox address as the username. The app needs the SMTP.SendAsApp permission with admin consent, and it must be registered in Exchange Online with access to that mailbox. A client secret expires, so enter the new one here before it does.
If saving reports that a file cannot be written, the save did not complete. The file named in the message, or its folder, belongs to another user. When scheduled tasks run as root, that user is often root. Make them owned by the user your site runs as, then save again. Your hosting provider can do this for you. Scheduled Tasks Setup explains how to run the cron job as that user.
